The topography has a significant influence on the accuracy of the propagation model. Shadowing by hills is quite important and therefore highly accurate databases are required. Databases can be purchased in different resolutions from several distributors.


The USGS (United States Geological Survey) offers topographical databases from the whole earth for free download. This data can directly be converted with WinProp to WinProp's data format. So you can use WinProp together without any further costs for topographical databases.

The format of the topographical pixel databases is quite simple:

Clutter / Morpho / Land Usage

To increase the accuracy of the prediction, the land usage (forest, open area, suburban, urban, dense urban, traffic,...) at the receiver pixel can be used for a specific additional loss to be added to the receiver pixel. InWinProp this loss loss can be defined frequency dependent, i.e. different losses for different frequency bands.
Besides the loss at the reciver pixel the clutter database can also be used to define the ground properties (for ground reflection or scattering).


The format of the clutter data is identical to the topographical pixel databases and it is quite simple:

Conversion


A very open ASCII data format allows a fast import of arbitrary database formats. Converters for nearly all popular database formats are available:

  • USGS (topographical databases for free download available)

  • HGT

  • Aircom Enterprise

  • Nokia NetAct & NPS/X

  • Ericsson TEMS

  • Agilent Wizard

The import of these data formats can be tested before purchasing the software. Please send us your data by e-mail and we will convert it for you and send you the converted data together with our database viewer. So you can be sure that all WinProp modules will be able to read your data.

If your data format is not on the list above and if you are not able to develop a converter to the open import data format of WinProp, you should contact us and send us a sample file together with the format description. We will send you an offer for the integration of your new converter within a few days.
