3G Network Planning and Simulation

Coverage and Capacity Prediction for 3G Networks

Introduction

The planning and design of 3G networks comes along with completely new challenges compared with 2G network planning. Different services and service mixes as well as dynamic network behavior (e.g. CDMA cell breathing) and technological influences (e.g. soft handover, fast power control) have to be considered properly at an early stage of the network planning process. Due to the fact that these networks are interference limited, capacity and service coverage are not independent, and the planning tool has to cope with the mutual influence.

The following figure depicts the well known "cell breathing" effect in CDMA networks.

The most challenging areas for the deployment of 3G networks are currently urban and indoor environments. Especially in these scenarios highly reliable propagation predictions are required as they influence to a great extend the serving cell assignment and the experienced interference levels. To be able to consider handover problems due to mobility a realistic cell assignment and therefore realistic propagation predictions are required. Advanced propagation models as implemented in ProMan are therefore the necessary groundwork for any realistic system simulation.

System simulations help to evaluate mobile network performance in different environments with different configurations or network layouts. Performance indicators of interest are network capacity, service availability and also service quality from the user point of view. System simulations are required for the network planning process and help to come to an cost effective investment in air interface network infrastructure. This is achieved by reducing the number of Node B (and sites) to a minimum still fulfilling capacity and service quality constraints.
