Network Optimizer - Example in dense urban area

Automatic Optimization of Antennas, Carriers and Transmit Power

Introduction

This is an example of an optimization project of an urban scenario. The project is based on the CDMA air interface. As shown in the picture below there are 18 sites located in the city - each site with three transmitters. This means there are 54 transmitter available.

The network optimizer is used to determine the relevant sites to achieve a good coverage. The goal of the optimization is not to get a network configuration which is able to offer the highest service everywhere, but to have all areas covered in the city.

Cell Areas

The following image shows the cell areas of the active transmitters after optimization. From 54 transmitters, 23 transmitters are considered as relevant by the network optimizer. The white arrows show the active transmitters after optimization.

The total area is covered, even with only 23 transmitters.

Interference

The image below shows the Eb/No in the urban area. The selection of the relevant transmitters is also based on the Eb/No thresholds defined by the user. Here the minimum required Eb/No is 3 dB - and this requirement is met everywhere.

Detailed evaluation of results

The results obtained by the network optimizer are presented in a table.

Site Priority Carrier Individual Coverage Total Coverage
Site  12 Ant 2 1 0 51,24% 51,17%
Site  14 Ant 3 2 0 4,51% 55,17%
Site  11 Ant  3 3 0 5,97% 57,81%
Site  5 Ant  3 4 0 8,27% 62,23%
Site  6 Ant  2 5 0 8,03% 63,24%
Site  15 Ant 3 6 0 6,32% 64,90%
Site  12 Ant 1 7 0 7,63% 66,27%
Site  11 Ant  2 8 0 12,12% 67,38%
Site  6 Ant  3 9 0 12,09% 68,06%
Site  16 Ant 1 10 0 8,97% 68,84%
Site  8 Ant  2 11 0 6,47% 69,89%
Site  5 Ant  2 12 0 12,28% 70,87%
Site  4 Ant  3 13 0 16,36% 71,61%
Site  8 Ant  3 14 0 25,38% 72,50%
Site  7 Ant  2 15 0 31,93% 73,48%
Site  2 Ant  1 16 0 18,34% 74,34%
Site  3 Ant  3 17 0 19,07% 75,24%
Site  4 Ant  2 18 0 20,41% 76,15%
Site  10 Ant  1 19 0 13,04% 77,02%
Site  1 Ant  3 20 0 39,43% 78,10%
Site  3 Ant  2 21 0 41,04% 78,90%
Site  13 Ant 2 22 0 17,67% 79,70%
Site  13 Ant 3 23 0 42,96% 80,71%

In this case the total coverage is only 80% as pixels inside buildings are not considered. This means about 20% of the pixels are located inside buildings and are not counted for the evaluation.
