Wireless Air Interface: IEEE 802.16

Fixed WiMAX - IEEE 802.16-2004

Fixed WiMAX is defined in the 802.16-2004 version of the IEEE 802.16 standard. WiMAX uses Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing Access (OFDMA) and supports fixed and mobile access in line of sight (LOS) and non line of sight (NLOS) environments.

Mobile WiMAX - IEEE 802.16e

Mobile WiMAX is based on IEEE 802.16e air interface and is optimized for dynamic mobile radio channels. 802.16e is an amendment of the IEEE 802.16-2004 standard. This amendment  supports handover and roaming and uses Scalable Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing Access (SOFDMA).
Service providers offering 802.16e can also use their network to provide fixed services.

Applications for 802.16-2004 and 802.16e WiMAX networks

WiMAX is a broadband wireless technology supporting fixed, nomadic, portable and mobile access. In order to meet the requirements of  these four different access types, two versions of WiMAX have been defined. The first is based on the IEEE 802.16-2004 standard and is optimized for fixed and nomadic access. The second one, based on the IEEE 802.16e, is an amendment to the 802.16-2004 and supports portability and mobility.
