Application

Broadband wireless access systems are more and more important in the area of mobile communications. They enable subscribers to have a high speed data connection at home, in the office, or wherever they go.

WiMAX is a new technology, specified in IEEE 802.16. It is a high-capacity IP-based technology, based on open standards to be deployed either as a new network installation or as an overlay to complement existing 2G and 3G wireless air interfaces.

High speed internet access, new multimedia services and applications are supported by WiMAX.
Depending on the mobility of the subscribers, there are two sub-standards of WiMAX:

  • Fixed WiMAX (IEEE 802.16-2004) for all stationary (or nomadic) subscribers
  • Mobile WiMAX (IEEE 802.16e) for all mobile subscribers (incl. handover between different cells)
Equipment with multiple advanced antenna capabilities - MIMO and beamforming - will be integrated for higher throughput and capacity in the next generation of WiMAX networks.

Propagation Models for WiMAX


Propagation models must be adapted to the requirements of WiMAX. And this is more than only calibrating existing models for new frequency bands.
WiMAX requires predictions on multiple heights (e.g. inside buildings) or on prediction heights relative to the roof top level (for fixed WiMAX installations).

Network Planning for WiMAX


Network Planning Modules must be able to handle the flexible and adaptive air interface of WiMAX.

This is in combination with the multi service concept of WiMAX a big challenge for the network simulators.
