Propagation Engine for Forsk ATOLL

Integration of WinProp's Propagation Models into ATOLL from Forsk

Integration

The wave propagation engines PRO-U and PRO-R of the WinProp software package is fully integrated into ATOLL, the radio network planning solution of Forsk. Atoll is a  windows-based radio network planning (RNP) tool that supports wireless telecom operators during the whole network lifetime.

The WinProp plug-in for the Atoll tool includes the dominant path model as well as the 3D IRT (Intelligent Ray Tracing) model.
Both deterministic models are based on the evaluation of topographical (DTM) and 3D building data (building data either derived from clutter heights or given as 3D vector data) and allow the coverage prediction in urban scenarios incl. indoor penetration.
Due to the deterministic approach a high accuracy is achieved which has been verified by taking into account numerous measurement campaigns. The computation time is in the range of minutes and therefore far below other deterministic models. The auto-calibration of model parameters based on measurement data is possible and ensures high accuracy in specific scenarios.

Depending on the clutter the transition to the Atoll standard propagation model can be utilized, i.e. prediction with WinProp model in urban area and with the Atoll standard propagation model outside the urban area. A corresponding polygon around the urban area is defined automatically based on the clutter data. The interaction between both models ensures a smooth transition.

Furthermore the dominant path propagation model allows predictions in large areas without building data based only on the evaluation of topographical (DTM) and land usage (clutter) data (incl. individual heights for each clutter or clutter and frequency-dependent attenuations).

By using the highly accurate wave propagation models the network design especially within dense urban environments reaches a new quality. The Plug-In for Atoll provides sophisticated wave propagation models for urban, suburban, and rural scenarios.

The combination of the deterministic models (either 3D Intelligent Ray Tracing (IRT) or Urban Dominant Path Model) and the empirical COST 231 Walfisch-Ikegami model leads to one of the best and most accurate approaches to urban propagation modeling.
