Urban Scenarios

Propagation Models and Databases for Urban Scenarios

Application

Propagation of electromagnetic waves in urban scenarios in the frequency range above 300 MHz is influenced by reflections and diffractions at the buildings. Therefore a detailed vector database of the buildings is required.

For frequencies below 300 MHz, the empirical propagation models used for rural or suburban scenarios can be used even in urban scenarios.

Typically the multipath propagation is very important in urban environments (see figure). Simple empirical propagation models are therefore not sufficient for an accurate prediction of the signal level.

The urban propagation models can be used for cellular network planning as well as for LOS analysis (microwave links). Antennas can be mounted below the rooftop level or above (if they are mounted below rooftop level this leads to microcells).

Propagation Models

Phenomena like multi-path propagation, reflection, diffraction and shadowing have a significant influence on the received signal level. Therefore the propagation models should consider these phenomena to obtain accurate results.

WinProp offers a wide variety of empirical and ray optical propagation models for urban scenarios:
More information about all prediction models for urban scenarios can be found on the page of the  Propagation Models.

Databases

WinProp can use vector databases (either 2.5D or 3D) to describe the buildings in urban scenarios.

In 2.5 D case each building is described by a polygonal ground plane and a height (polygonal cylinders). In this case the consideration of the topography is optionally possible.

In 3D case the building data is similar to the indoor database format. This allows a detailed modeling ogf the rooftops, etc. But computation time is also increasing.

More information concerning the databases (incl. format and specifications for different converters) can be found on the Database Page.
